Convert my overseas driving licence to Australia Driving License

I have stayed in Sydney, Australia for almost 5 years now, but till now , i still don’t have Australian driving license yet. The reason is simple because i never thought i gonna need it. Because i live in sydney cbd, very close to bus station, train station, supermarket, and shopping places. So even if i got a car, i wont think i will drive it so often though. But i gonna move out soon to suburb, that’s why now i’m thinking to get my aussie driving license here. I heard if i still got overseas driving license, i can get the full license instead of the learner or P1 license if i pass the test. Luckily, i found my Indonesian Driving license, and its still not expired yet until January 2008.

rtaAfter reading some information on RTA ( Road and traffic authority) NSW  website, i went to RTA office in Wynyard this morning to confirm if i need to get translation for my indonesian driving licence.  They told me that i will need to get the translation and apparently only one place i can get the translation from, its from  the community relations commission for multicultural NSW . The office is located at Level 8 , 175 Castlereagh St Sydney. Because its not too far from the RTA office in Wynyard, i decided to go there as well at that time. When i got there, there are around 10 people are waiting, and  there are only 2 counter. It took me 1.5 hr waiting there. and cost me $65 for 2 weeks waiting time. They have 1 day service, but they charge $100. Because i don’t really need it urgently, so i just choose the $65. Once i got the translation, i will go to RTA again to apply for the test, and hopefully i can get full license soon.

    Hey Teddy,

I am thinking about converting my license too. I might have to get a translation from that place too. Could you tell me what they are gonna translate? I am sure they be able to state my name, birthday, issue date and authority. But what about the license classes I hold and what about special restrictions like glasses to be worn? How can they do that? It’s just symbols on there. What did they do in your case?

hi steve, for the licence class, they will just translate from what is written in your original driving licence. I reckon RTA might have the detail already for the overseas licence classes. i’m not sure though about special restrictions.
If you wanna go there, make sure u go there earlier, so you wont wait too long. It’s a very slow service with expensive translation fee i would say.

i was told that if you were issued a full license overseas and you had it for atleast 3 years you can get a full license without going through the l,p and all that crap.

    Pak Teddy,…

Maaf mau tanya…, proses nya gimana ya untuk driving licence ini. Kalau kita bisa kasih translation Indonesian Driving Licence kita nggak perlu pake test lagi (written & practical) or gimana?

    Thank you in advance.
