Surabaya.com sold for us$50000
I just read one news about selling and buying domain name business, and i’m quite surprise when i saw that surabaya.com was sold for us$50000. Surabaya is the name of city in east Java, Indonesia. And its the city where i grow up before i move to sydney , australia. I have no idea who is the owner and who bought it for that price, and what they gonna do with the domain name. I tried to search in google, but cant find more detail information there. the reason why this domain can be sold for us$5000 is maybe because this word “surabaya” means something else in other language, because i’m doubt if the buyer is indonesian, because us$50000 is pretty big money if you convert it to rupiah(indonesian money currency). Anyone got more detail about this?

It’s a geodomain, a domain name representing a specific geographic location. Geodomains are expensive because they can be developed into a full-fledged site covering all aspects of the city. Melbourne.com, for instance, sold for 700,000 recently.
See this site for more insights on geodomains: www.simplygeo.com. The article featuring Castello Brothers is particularly worth reading.
As for Surabaya.com, I believe it’s a long term investment since the owner can not immediately monetize it (other than reselling it for a higher sum). Internet development in Indonesia is way behind that of developed countries. So, I don’t think building a site on that domain will generate much revenue (let alone profit).
The whois information says it’s under privacy protection. Only the registrar information is revealed.
Just wondering, how much then Jakarta.com traded?
